Firm Foundation
Luke 6
Jesus and his followers are ridiculed by the religious types for breaking "Sabbath law." They rubbed the chaff off the grain so they could eat a little food. Some religious leaders forbade this kind of activity, and this is the reason for the accusations here. This might be something like stopping at a hot dog vending stand in a town with blue laws. Technically the activity is illegal, but really, who cares?
Jesus makes the case biblically, that Sabbath was made for people, so why would someone unnecessarily burden themselves with rules about how to rest? Jesus isn't a slave to rules; he is in charge. That's why the next thing that happens is this miraculous healing of a man's withered hand. Healing is good. It is helping those that are hurting, and it is right to do what is good, period.
Later, Jesus points out how ridiculous it is for a person to act holier-than-thou, especially when they are just as ugly and dirty as the one's they treat with contempt. Instead, we need to live a life that is full of life, health and vitality. As we might say today, its not about what you say, its about who you are. Jesus then says this, "if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. When the swollen river came crashing in, it collapsed like a house of cards." Don't let that happen to you. Take charge by doing what is right, by doing good in all circumstances. That way you'll be on a firm foundation that no one can shake.
